The Scary Issue of POSING!

Stuck much?

If you’ve ever felt stuck during a photo session—unsure of what to say next, or worried your clients are about to lose interest—you’re not alone.

Even seasoned photographers freeze when the energy dips or when kids start running wild.

That’s why I created a simple structure that keeps every session flowing smoothly—whether you’re working with couples, families, or a mix of both. I call it the SMILE Framework, and it’s my go-to system for confident, natural posing (without memorizing dozens of Pinterest ideas... like love 'em to death, but we forget so fast lol).

The Problem Most Beginners Face

New photographers often think posing is about perfect placement.

But the real secret? It’s about creating comfort, connection, and variety—WITHOUT overthinking. When you show up with a clear flow, your clients trust you instantly, and your gallery practically builds itself. It also takes the pressure off of you. There is nothing worse than being in the moment freaking out thinking... um what do I do next? Imposter syndrome at its finest. 😭

The SMILE Method at a Glance

Here’s a quick peek at the five pillars that keep my sessions consistent and relaxed:

  • S – Symmetry → The classic, camera-aware shot that grounds every gallery.
  • M – Moments → The interactive prompts that spark laughter and connection.
  • I – Individuals & Intimates → Breaking into smaller groups or couple shots for variety.
  • L – Levels → Mixing seated and standing poses to match energy and environment.
  • E – Emotion → Wrapping up with genuine connection—forehead touches, laughs, and quiet closeness.

Each letter builds on the last, helping you move from “everyone look here!” to capturing those in-between momentsclients actually frame.

Why It Works

The SMILE Framework keeps you present and intentional. Instead of panicking for the next idea, you’ll always know what to do next—leaving more space for creativity and genuine emotion.

And the best part? You can apply it to any session—beach portraits, studio shoots, even chaotic toddler sessions. (Especially chaotic toddler sessions. 😉)
